Empower Children for Success (ECFS), Gardner Child Care Policy Advocacy Program, and NewVue Communities, Inc are proud to announce a new training titled, Landlord and Aspiring Landlord Stewards Training Program. Led by Marites MacLean (ECFS) and Francisco Ramos (NewVue Communities), this bilingual online training series runs weekly on Tuesdays from September 22 through November 10, 2026 (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM).
Addressing a Critical Community Need
Access to stable, safe, and quality rental housing is a foundational social determinant of health and child well-being. In North Central Massachusetts, landlords and aspiring property owners frequently face significant challenges with tenant relations, state legal compliance, property maintenance, and financial planning, often lacking access to practical training, tools, and ongoing peer support.
Furthermore, home-based childcare providers who offer essential early education and allow parents to participate in the workforce frequently encounter hurdles when leasing rental properties. Without proper guidance, property owners may misunderstand legal protections, insurance requirements, or the immense value that family childcare brings to local communities.
Bridging the Gap: From Property Owner to Housing Steward
The Landlord Steward Program shifts the narrative from transactional property management to a community-centered housing stewardship mindset. A property owner simply manages an asset; a housing steward manages an asset while creating opportunities for families and neighborhoods to thrive.
This comprehensive 8-session program equips landlords with real-world strategies and legal framework guidance, covering critical topics such as:
- The Stewardship Mindset & Landlord Readiness: Transitioning to people-first property ownership and assessing long-term goals.
- Financial Management & Rental Operations: Managing cash flow, budgeting, and leveraging emergency rental assistance resources for tenants.
- Fair Housing Laws & Tenant Selection: Understanding protected classes, reasonable accommodations, and non-discriminatory screening procedures.
- Healthy Homes & Operations: Navigating lead poisoning prevention, radon, mold mitigation, maintenance standards, and habitability.
- Childcare Provider Tenants: Special session facilitated by ECFS exploring family childcare operations, liability procedures, and supporting early educators in rental homes.
- Civic Engagement & Collective Power: Addressing regional gentrification and building strong local landlord networks.
The Ripple Effect of Housing Stewardship
When landlords are empowered with knowledge, the positive impact ripples throughout our entire region. By fostering strong landlord-tenant communication, fair treatment, and safe living environments, this partnership helps prevent disputes and evictions, stabilizes family routines, and protects community health.
